Maksimir Park was opened to the public in 1794 and was the first of its kind in this region of Europe. There are so many things to love about it, but here are my top 5.
Maksimir Park was opened to the public in 1794 and was the first of its kind in this region of Europe. There are so many things to love about it, but here are my top 5.
1. There are 5 lakes within its 18 hectares of space where you can relax, admire nature and have a picnic. I can’t even count the number of picnics I’ve had here over the years. A blanket, a bottle of wine, a baguette with some fresh cheese, deli meat and fruit and you’re all set for a cozy afternoon enjoying the outdoors with the peeps you love. It’s a great place to escape the crowds and find a little peace!
2. There are around 10 kilometers of running/walking/biking trails to explore. I used to run there regularly with my sister-in-law and sometimes Ivan would follow us around on his bike making up weird songs to keep us motivated. My favourite (translated from Croatian): “Let’s go little fishies, keep on running, hop hop hop, hop hop hop,” and repeat 78 times. Short and sweet – it actually got pretty catchy by the end of it. If you need a personalized, motivational song, let Ivan know… he’s always working on new material :) You can run endlessly in Maksimir, constantly creating new circuits with all the interconnecting paths. Another plus – even on a really hot, summer day, the temperature stays relatively fresh in the forested areas so you can keep on going (and singing).
3. The park has a super cute restaurant and cafe with a huge outdoor space to sit and have a meal or just a coffee/drink. Who doesn’t love a good drink on a terrace? Add in the park’s picturesque surroundings with the cleanest air, and it’s pretty much the best place to chill on a lazy weekend morning. After coffee, go for a walk, get an ice cream, sit on the benches, soak up some vitamin D, and relish in the simple joys.
4. The restaurant (mentioned above) is a great venue for any occasion. It’s where we had our Croatian wedding so it brings back great memories every time I visit – which is often. Friends and family came from all over and it was the perfect place to celebrate. The little restaurant stands alone with windows lining almost the whole venue. Lots of natural light, beautiful views and fresh air – just a refreshing atmosphere altogether.
5. It even has a cute little zoo, home to lions, red pandas, meerkats, grey wolves, brown bears, Chinese leopards, and chimps to name a few. You can even make a donation and become an adoptive parent to an animal and give your little bundle of joy an official name, then get updates on him/her with a photo! The zoo is definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Zagreb and/or want to expand your family :)
