This is why we were so happy to hear Mayor Tomašević's announcement that the Zagreb Christmas Market is returning to its old ways this year! In fact, it could even be the most diverse yet with lots to offer!
Last year's Zagreb Christmas Market was modest to say the least, and I must admit that many were disappointed along with me. One reason was because everyone was still a bit reserved because of Covid 19, but in my opinion there could have been more to see and do throughout Advent last year.

If you live in the USA or Canada and you’re thinking about Croatia as your travel destination this year, you’ll be happy to hear there are 2 direct flights to Croatia (so far… and there could be more).
The two direct flights are: New York - Dubrovnik Toronto - Zagreb Of course there are many other flight options with stop-overs, and we’ll get to those in a minute…
So you’re thinking about a Croatian vacation? Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar… but how are you going to get around? How are the roads, trains, buses, ferries? We’re here to give you a run-down of different forms of transportation in Croatia!
Generally speaking, Croatia is not a big country, so it’s pretty easy to get from place to place. The means of transport are relatively modern by today's world standards, and during the tourist season, from around May to mid-October, the frequency in bus/train/ferry lines definitely increases. Getting there by car (the quickest option
The drive from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes without stopping takes around 2h, and depends on the tourist season. One part of drive will take you on the main Croatian highway towards Split. You will have to get off the highway at the “Karlovac” exit.
Sharks in the Adriatic Sea are a normal and not bad phenomenon in the water. Sharks very rarely attack humans. We know it's not very pleasant when you feel something touch you while swimming in the sea, but maybe some facts in this text will calm you down. Since records exist, in 150 years, sharks in the Adriatic have been responsible for the deaths of 11 swimmers. The last shark attack was recorded in 2008 in a bay on island Vis. Although the Slovenian diver claimed to have been attacked by a great white shark, this has never been proved.
If you’re visiting Croatia and want to bring home something special to remember your trip, we’ve got you covered! Here’s a list of unique, local products that you can easily find while travelling around Croatia.
Although Croatia is quite a small country with a population of less than 4 million, the number of people living abroad with Croatian heritage is very large! We've come up with a list well known people that all have Croatian roots! Did you know they were all Croatian? I certainly didn't!
Through the years of working with many different guests, we’ve been asked a lot about the vegan and vegetarian restaurant options in Croatia. I’m happy to report that every year, the vegan/vegetarian options are more and more in Croatia!
In this blog we will go through some popular destinations in Croatia, and list the top restaurants for vegans and vegetarians in each place. So, let's start with Croatian capital:
Today we are in the beautiful city of Rijeka! Rijeka is located in the Northern Adriatic Sea, in the Kvarner Bay. It’s definitely known as a port city, but it's so much more than just that!
Trying to figure out the best time to swim in the Adriatic Sea in Croatia? Here I’ve outlined average sea temperatures by month and season, and given some info about location so you can decide the ideal time for you!
Many people who visit Zagreb plan to see Plitvice Lakes before making their way to the coast. It also makes for an easy day trip from Zagreb if you’re not heading to the coast!
Flying into Zagreb and looking for the best option to get downtown? Here I’ll outline 5 different options, including the cheapest and the fastest, most convenient ways to reach the city.
The public bus would be the cheapest, the taxis would be the most expensive, and a private transfer service would be somewhere in the middle, but it would be the most convenient, pleasant and helpful way to get to your destination in the city, by far
Bakeries are on every corner and eating from the bakery is part of the culture here! But it can be overwhelming walking into a bakery, and trying to blindly choose a pastry that you’ve never tried! Here we’ll give you a list and description of the best bakery items you can find in Croatia!
On one of our recent trips, we visited the beautiful town of Opatija. Here we’ll outline the top things to see and do if you find yourself in the area!
Samobor is always at the top of our list for a day trip when my family and friends come to visit us in Zagreb. Samobor is a quaint, charming town with the absolute best dessert in Croatia, and it’s the perfect day trip from Zagreb, since it’s less than an hour’s drive!
If you’re planning to travel to Croatia, it might be a good idea to learn a few essential beginner phrases to help you get by! Here’s why:
Learning a few Croatian phrases before you travel will go a long way in making sure you have the ultimate experience. You can learn so much about a place by chatting with the local people (much more than in any guide book or pamphlet). Although most Croatian people do speak English (especially in the popular tourist destinations), they really appreciate the effort when someone tries to learn and say a few Croatian words. If you’re traveling to Croatia and thinking about attending a mass, or any other church service (perhaps even a wedding or a funeral), it might be nice to be able to join a few prayers. In this post I’ll translate The Lord’s Prayer / Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostles Creed, Glory Be, and the Prayer for the Faithful Departed. These are a few of the most common ones here, as Croatia is predominantly Catholic. I’ll also translate how to say the sign of the Cross as you cross yourself (as you'll use it often during any service!) You’ll also find the pronunciation guide under each line, where I’ve written everything phonetically, so you can learn how to properly say it all and join in prayers in Croatian like a pro!
The Croatian portal www.24sata.hr published an article about working hours of Croatian National Parks and nature parks during specific situations with COVID 19. Here we've translated it into English - the article in Croatian can be found here: https://www.24sata.hr/news/ovako-od-sutra-rade-nacionalni-parkovi-kafici-trgovacki-centri-692269
By the decision of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, 8 national parks and 11 nature parks will start operating on Monday, May 11. Many people wonder if traveling alone in Croatia is a good idea (is it safe, easy, etc). The answer really depends on what you’re looking for, but Croatia might not be the destination to choose if you’re looking to travel solo. Read the list below to get a better idea if it’s really for you:
In this post I wanted to give our readers a few suggestions, for those planning on visiting Varazdin (the former capital city of Croatia). In my opinion Varazdin is the most beautiful and interesting city in Northern Croatia, and it’s definitely worth the visit!
