What do Croatians snack on? What should you try when you’re in Croatia on vacation? You can fit right in if you walk around munching on these tasty snacks!
*I've now updated the list and added 7 more, so don’t leave Croatia without trying all twelve!

1. Napolitanke
These flaky wafer cookies should almost be illegal for their addictiveness. They’re so light and crispy and layered so finely with different flavours of cream (my favourite is the classic chocolate cream, shown in the picture).
They’re perfectly bite sized as well, which makes it easy to keep having just “one-more.” Watch out, you’ll polish off a kilo of these cookies after 30 minutes in the car.

2. Tortica
My other very favourite Croatian treat. These are basically a larger napolitanke wafer, covered in dark chocolate. They’re individually wrapped, so you can stash them everywhere - in your bag, purse, pocket, glove-compartment - all the essential spots :)
These are made by the same famous Croatian company that makes the wafers, Kras. They've been around forever and have perfected their sweet treats!

3. Smoki
These are the Croatian alternative to chips and they are tasty, salty, peanut flavored, crunchy, airy, delightful puffs. Definitely give them a try if you’re in the mood for a salty snack.

4. Stapici
Basically pretzels, but in stick form, and they’re great if you just want some plain old salty goodness - no other explanation needed for these snacks.
5. Bananko
Ivan loves these. They’re not my cup of tea, but they definitely have a market here in Croatia. The best way I can describe them is pretty much a banana-flavoured marshmallow, coated in chocolate.
They’re small and individually wrapped, so pick one up and give it a try. You’ll either love it, or throw up in your mouth a little bit - there’s not really an in-between. Let me know which category you fall into :) World of Snacks describes Bananko in detail if you want to read more!

6. Vic Crackers
These are lovely, round, salty crackers. They remind me a lot of “Ritz Crackers” and they’re probably the best ones I’ve found in Croatia. Nice by themselves or with some cheese (because everything is better with cheese)!
7. Petit Keks
These are classic little tea biscuits! There’s not much explanation needed, but they have a touch of sweetness, they’re great for taking on the go, and kids love them. They remind me of “Arrowroot Biscuits” from back home.

8. Jaffa Keks
You’ll find Jafa Keks in most Croatian homes. They are basically soft vanilla biscuits, with the topside coated in chocolate. Just under the chocolate in the center of the cookie, there is a thin layer of orange jelly (it’s a chewy jelly, not something that will leak out, if that makes sense).
Personally, I’m not a fan because I don’t love the orange-chocolate mix, but pretty much everyone I know loves them.

9. Čipi Čips
Croatian chips are slowly being offered in different flavors, but the two basic flavors you'll find in EVERY store, are “Salted” and “Paprika” (red pepper). You’ll usually be able to find Sour Cream & Onion as well, but don’t count on Doritos, or many other types and styles.
There are ruffles, though! So if you’re a fan of chip dip, you’re in luck with the proper chip shape (but you won’t actually find any pre-made dip, so you’ll have to home-make that).

10. Rum plocice
Croatians love their rum flavoring, so this one is no surprise. These are literally called “rum tiles.” The best way I can describe them are like a soft & chewy rum toffee, thinly coated in chocolate. Ivan loves these, but they are very sweet and aren’t first on my list of go-to snacks here in Croatia.
11. Motto Keks
Another one of my favorite Croatian snacks are these Motto cookies. They are little vanilla and chocolate cookie-sandwiches, with a chocolate middle holding it all together. It’s hard to eat just one and they go perfectly with a strong cup of coffee in the morning!
12. Domacica
I’m a big cookie fan, and Domacica never disappoint. "Domacica" literally means housewife. If you are invited to someone's house for coffee, there's a 90% chance they will open a box of these cookies and set them on the table in front of you.
These cookies go very nicely with tea and coffee, because the chocolate layer (with top quality, semi-sweet chocolate) on top of the cookie melts when you dip it, along with the biscuit, and you might find yourself polishing off an entire box without even realizing it.

Traveling around in a foreign country requires that you sample the local snacks, so stop by the corner store and give these goodies a try.
Let me know how it goes and what your favourite was! Were you addicted to the wafers and finish a whole kilo-brick of them in one sitting? Thoughts on Bananko, Jaffa, Rum Kocke?
Happy snacking & travels,
Sarah
