Our Father, Hail Mary, and Other Prayers in Croatian

6/30/2020

If you’re traveling to Croatia and thinking about attending a mass, or any other church service (perhaps even a wedding or a funeral), it might be nice to be able to join a few prayers.

In this post I’ll translate The Lord’s Prayer / Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostles Creed, Glory Be, and the Prayer for the Faithful Departed. These are a few of the most common ones here, as Croatia is predominantly Catholic.

I’ll also translate how to say the sign of the Cross as you cross yourself (as you'll use it often during any service!)

You’ll also find the pronunciation guide under each line, where I’ve written everything phonetically, so you can learn how to properly say it all and join in prayers in Croatian like a pro!
First, the sign of the Cross (as you’ll use it frequently throughout a service)

Sign of the Cross (ZNAK SVETOG KRIZA) in English and Croatian

In the name of the Father,
U ime Oca
[oo ee-may O-tsa]

and Son
i Sina
[ee See-na]

and Holy Spirit.
i Duha Svetoga.
[ee Doo-ha Sve-to-ga]

Amen.
Amen.
[Ah-men]

Our Father (OČENAŠ) in English and Croatian

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Oče naš, koji jesi na nebesima
[oh-chay nash, koy-ee yes-si na ne-bess-ee-ma]

hallowed be thy name.
sveti se ime tvoje,
[sve-tee say ee-may tvoy-ay]

thy kingdom come,
dođi kraljevstvo tvoje,
[dough-gee kral-yev-stvo tvoy-ay]

thy will be done,
budi volja tvoja
[boo-dee vol-ya t-voy-a]

on earth as it is in heaven.
kako na nebu tako i na zemlji.
[ka-ko na neigh-boo ta-ko ee na zem-l-yee]

Give us this day our daily bread,
Kruh naš svagdanji daj nam danas.
[kroo nas svag-dan-nee dye nam da-nas]

and forgive us our trespasses
I otpusti nam duge naše
[ee oat-poost-ee nam doo-gae na-shay]

as we forgive those who trespass against us.
kako i mi otpuštamo dužnicima našim.
[ka-ko ee mee oat-poost-ah-mo dooj-neets-ee-ma]

And lead us not into temptation,
I ne uvedi nas u napast,
[ee neigh po-ved-ee nas oo na-past]

but deliver us from evil.
nego izbavi nas od zla.
[neigh-go eez-ba-vee nas owd zla]

Amen.
Amen.
[Ah-men]

Hail Mary (ZDRAVO MARIJO) in English and Croatian

Hail Mary, full of grace,
Zdravo Marijo, milosti puna,
[zdra-vo Ma-ree-yo, mee-lowst-ee poona]

The Lord is with thee.
Gospodin s tobom,
[Go-spo-din s tow-bome]

Blessed art thou among women,
blagoslovljena ti među ženama
[bla-go-slov-l-ye-na tee me-joo jen-ama]

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
i blagoslovljen plod utrobe tvoje, Isus.
[ee bla-go-slov-lyen plod oo-tro-bay tvoy-ye, Ee-soos]

Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Sveta Marijo, Majko Božja,
[Sveh-ta Ma-ree-yo, My-ko Boj-ya]

pray for us sinners
moli za nas grješnike
[mo-lee za nas gr-yesh-nee-kay]

now and at the hour of death.
sada i na času smrti naše.
[sa-da ee na cha-shoo smr-tee na-sha]

Amen.
Amen.
[Ah-men]

Apostles Creed (APOSTOLSKO VJEROVANJE) in English and Croatian

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Vjerujem u Boga, Oca svemogućega,
[vy-air-oo-yem oo Bo-ga, O-tsa sve-mo-guch-ay-ga]

Creator of Heaven and earth;
Stvoritelja neba i zemlje.
[Stvor-ee-tel-ya ne-ba ee zeml-ye]

and in Jesus Christ,
I u Isusa Krista,
[ee oo Ee-soo-sa Kree-sta]

His only Son Our Lord,
Sina njegova jedinoga, Gospodina našega
[See-na n-yeg-ova yed-een-oga, Go-spo-dee-na nash-eh-ga]

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
koji je začet po Duhu Svetom,
[ko-yee ye za-chet po Doo-hoo Sve-tom]

born of the Virgin Mary,
rođen od Marije djevice,
[ro-jen owed Ma-ree-ye d-ye-vee-say]

suffered under Pontius Pilate,
mučen pod Poncijem Pilatom,
[moo-chen pod Pone-tsee-yem Pea-la-tom]

was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell;
raspet, umro i pokopan; sašao nad pakao,
[ra-spet, oom-ro ee po-ko-pan; sa-sha-oh nad pa-ka-oh]

the third day He rose again from the dead;
treći dan uskrsnuo od mrtvih,
[trech-ee dan oo-skrs-noo-oh owed mrt-veeh]

He ascended into Heaven,
uzašao na nebesa,
[oo-za-sha-oh na ne-bess-a]

and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty;
sjedi o desnu Boga Oca svemogućega;
[syed-ee o des-noo Bo-ga Ot-sa sve-mo-guch-eh-ga]

from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
odonud će doći suditi žive i mrtve.
[od-own-ood chey dough-chee soo-dee-tee jee-ve ee mrt-ve]

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
Vjerujem u Duha Svetoga,
[vyer-oo-yem oo Doo-ha Sve-to-ga]

the holy Catholic Church,
svetu Crkvu katoličku,
[sve-too ts-rk-voo ka-tow-leech-koo]

the communion of saints,
općinstvo svetih,
[op-cheens-tvo sve-teeh]

the forgiveness of sins,
oproštenje grijeha,
[o-prosht-en-ye gree-ye-ha]

the resurrection of the body
uskrsnuće tijela,
[oo-skrs-noo-chey tee-yel-a]

and life everlasting.
život vječni.
[jee-vot vyech-nee]

Amen.
Amen.
[Ah-men]

Glory Be (SLAVA OCU) in English and Croatian

Glory be to the Father,
Slava Ocu
[Sla-va O-tsu]

and to the Son,
i Sinu
[ee see-noo]

and to the Holy Spirit.
i Duhu Svetomu.
[ee Doo-hoo Sve-toe-moo]

As it was in the beginning,
Kako bijaše na početku,
[ka-ko bee-yash-ay na po-chet-koo]

is now, and ever shall be,
tako i sada i vazda
[ta-ko ee sa-da ee vaz-da]

world without end.
i u vijeke vjekova.
[ee oo vee-ye-kay vye-ko-va]

Thank you for posting this. I have been visiting Croatia, KRK otok, for years. This is the best translation of the common prayers. I especially like the English along with translation.
God bless,
Chris

Thank you for this translation!
Can you translate the Jesus prayer after each decade of the Rosary?
O my Jesus forgive us our sins
Save us from the fires of hell
Lead all souls to heaven especially those in most need of thy mercy
Amen

Thank you Sarah and Ivan. It would be very helpful if you could add an audio pronouncing the prayers for reference, and if it's after each sentence, that would be just great.
I love your youtube videos! Keep the good work.
Best regards and many blessings
Daniel
